U15s Maesteg Away 06/03/16

Another game under our belt in a very sporadic season which has been affected by the weather a lot recently.  Also, another win on our record against quite a different Maesteg team to the team that came down to us earlier in the season & who we beat comfortably.  Right from the off though, you could see that the lads were well up for it & our attitude & effort quickly became the differentiation between the two sides.

The first try came from some sustained pressure after we chose to kick off.  Several phases of play later & a couple of trips up & down the filed, we found ourselves camped in their 22 & a nifty little snipe from Jason ended with him piling over for an early try, with the kick in front of the posts adding the extras from Joe, 0-7 & looking good.  The first half remained a tight affair with both teams having opportunities.  We added to our lead with a penalty kicked from in front of the posts for a 0-10 lead & we looked like we might add to it.  Pushing hard for a try & very close to the Maesteg line, we unfortunately gave a penalty away & from the resulting line out some weak defence from our part allowed the Maesteg open-side flanker to run through several attempted tackles & bundle over for a very good individual try.  Maesteg failed to convert the extras, despite the kick being in front of the posts, for a 5-10 half time score & game on!!!

The second half however, became a more comfortable affair with some stern defence on our part ensuring that Maesteg added nothing further to their score.  We however added two more tries, one for Niall who benefited from a barnstorming run from Callum McQ, a neat pop to Scott in support who then offloaded to Niall to finish of a well worked score under the sticks, converted by Joe.  The final try came from a good tactical ploy.  We had a penalty in front of their posts but chose to take the scrum to retain possession, we loaded the open side up, pulled the blind side defence out wide with our winger for the day Jamie standing as wide as possible & this opened up a nice channel for Lloyd to pick up from the scrum & exploit the space to cruise over for an un-opposed run-in.  We couldn't add the extras however, but had a 5-22 lead with 4 minutes left on the clock.

The last few minutes was all pressure from Maesteg, but again our stern defence & a nice clearance kick out to the 22 ensured that the clock edged over the 60 minutes with us still maintaining the score above & a 5-22 final score to win a good contest.

Fair play to the lads, compliments all round from spectators & opposition coaches.  Thanks to those who filled in positions not normally theirs (Callum D, Jamie, Lloyd, Mackenzie) & welcome to new player Ben Heycock.
